Cellist Carlyn Kessler enjoys a multifaceted career as a performer and educator.

She is a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Music, where she earned her Master of Music degree in Cello Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy and Bachelor of Music as a student of renowned performers and pedagogues Sharon Robinson and Melissa Kraut. Carlyn has performed across the country in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Chautauqua Institution and Oracle Arena, as well as in Canada and England.

Equally passionate about classical and popular music genres, Carlyn enjoys sharing her time between concert halls, stadiums, clubs, and recording studios. She has recently performed with popular artists Michael Bublé and Josh Groban, among others. Carlyn is the resident cellist for five-time Grammy nominated artist and composer David Arkenstone, with whom she has toured Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, and Arizona. As a recording artist, Carlyn is most recently the featured cellist on Arkenstone’s new albums Winterlude and David Arkenstone & Friends - LIVE!, popular fado artist David Silveira Garcia’s album Palco da Vida, and on the soundtracks of World of Warcraft, award-winning animated short film Let’s Eat (Anamon Studios).

A passionate chamber musician, Carlyn utilizes her love of chamber music through both international and local performances, education, and outreach. She is the cellist of the piano trio Curium, which specializes in the music of female composers. A winner of InterMusic SF’s Musical Career Grant Program, Curium released its debut CD Curium, featuring repertoire by female composers, in January 2023. Carlyn was selected to be an Emerging Artist Fellow in Chamber Music Silicon Valley's 2018-2019 season, and before relocating to California, Carlyn was a founding member of the Cleveland Cello Quartet, a genre-bending ensemble which was an Ensemble-In-Residence at The Music Settlement in Cleveland, OH.

While at CIM, Carlyn was a member of the Advanced Piano Trio Program through which she performed in a weeklong residency with the Chamber Music Society of Detroit with the NOA Trio. Carlyn has recently performed with celebrated classical artists Pekka Kuusisto, Martin Beaver, Axel Strauss, Steven Dann, and Frank Morelli, among others. She is an active member of Classical Revolution, which brings classical music to nontraditional venues and festivals throughout the nation, and formerly a Cleveland Clinic Performing Artist, Carlyn loves sharing her music in healthcare settings.

Carlyn has performed with numerous orchestras including the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music Orchestra, Sarasota Opera Orchestra, Musical Theater West (as principal cellist), Los Angeles Jewish Symphony, Marin Symphony, Fresno Philharmonic, Stockton Symphony, Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra, CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, Suburban Symphony Orchestra (principal cellist), Cleveland Opera Theater, and Banff Festival Orchestra/Opera Orchestra (served as principal cellist), and the CIM Orchestra (served as principal cellist), among others. Her summer music festival engagements have included Chamber Music Academy at Domaine Forget, Toronto Summer Music Festival, Banff Chamber Music Residency, the Banff Centre, the London Master Classes, Yellow Barn Young Artists Program, Meadowmount School of Music, and Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Devoted to music education, Carlyn maintains a thriving private cello studio, both in-person and online with students across the globe. She is currently on the faculty at the Colburn School’s Community School for the Performing Arts and maintains a private studio on the West side of Los Angeles. She previously served as an adjunct professor at The College of Wooster and Washington College, Suzuki faculty at Holy Names University Preparatory Music Program, and Department Head of Strings at The Music Settlement, a renowned community music school and large city hub for arts and culture. A passionate advocate for  nonprofit arts organizations, Carlyn previously worked on the administrative staff of The Walden School, a nonprofit creative and experiential summer music school and festival. Also an avid writer, Carlyn has published numerous articles with San Francisco Classical Voice and ClevelandClassical.com.

Carlyn plays on a 2012 cello by William Whedbee. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA with her husband Elliot. Outside of music, she enjoys going hiking, planning her next travel adventure, and exploring the Los Angeles restaurant scene.
